Here's the paper from 1946 when the Cooper River Bridge was hit by a ship.
Charleston Evening Post, Monday, February 25, 1946..... "Freighter Knocks Out Section of Huge Span During Windstorm". The old Cooper River Bridge (Grace Memorial) was hit by a ship, Nicaragua Victory the prior day. At the time the old Cooper River Bridge was the only bridge crossing the Cooper River joining Mt Pleasant and Charleston. It was built in 1929 by a private company and a toll was charged. Tragically a family of 5 were killed when their car tumbled into the river.
