I came up with the title to this article from a Google search. I was trying to see how prospects may be searching for South Carolina home insurance. I used all the typical searches like Charleston home insurance, Columbia home insurance, homeowners insurance rates, affordable home insurance or the cheapest home insurance. Our customers want to know who has the cheapest home insurance? How much is homeowners insurance in South Carolina? And the agents at Triest Agency are trained to look for rock bottom home insurance premiums for top rated home insurance companies.
What's the cheapest homeowners insurance company for home insurance in South Carolina?
The search came up with a bunch of websites claiming to give reviews and giving low rate companies or so they say. Some even sound very reputable but most are actually just websites soliciting insurance and trying to sway the consumer to their company or a company that they promote.
Insurance is regulated state by state...
Home insurance is different state by state. Insurance companies are regulated by state insurance commissioners. It's really not possible to say that an insurance company is the best in the United States. That company may offer an exceptional homeowners insurance policy in one state but a horrible one in another.
Insurance is a legal contract...
What many people fail to realize is that your South Carolina home insurance policy is a contract. You're buying a contract with an insurance company. In turn for your premium paid, the insurance company promises to pay you in the event of a covered claim to your house. Did you see how I said, "covered claim" ? What's actually covered or protected under your home insurance policy is written in the policy. If you don't see it in the policy then you most probably aren't covered. Let me give you an example. If you want earthquake coverage because you live in Summerville or Charleston where we have earthquakes, then you have to pay a premium for earthquake coverage. If your home is damaged because of an earthquake then are you covered? Yes, if you purchased earthquake coverage and it is included in your policy. This is a type of coverage that is not automatically included and most often it is excluded.
What happens if your furniture is destroyed in a fire?
Some South Carolina home insurance policies may provide for replacement cost coverage for personal property where another may offer actual cash value coverage. If your furniture that is over 20 years old is destroyed in a fire, will you be reimbursed based on the value of the furniture? What's the value of 20 year old furniture. Probably substantially less then the cost to replace it. What you want is a home insurance policy that includes replacement cost coverage for your personal property like furniture. If your furniture is destroyed in a fire and even if it is 20 years old and of little value, the insurance company will pay you an amount equal to the cost of new furniture. Not all policies have this.
Can you get a home policy from a national carrier like The Hartford or Travelers?
In coastal South Carolina and specifically Charleston, there are many insurance companies that primarily sell in coastal communities and aren't large national insurance companies. These companies won't register on a best list of home insurance companies because they're not offered in all 50 states. That doesn't mean that they're not great companies and don't offer super service. Most of the large national companies like Hartford, Travelers, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, Allstate or Nationwide are extremely restricted in offering new home insurance policies in Charleston. Why? Because of hurricanes. They are limited in what is called capacity. They don't want to put all their eggs in one basket. It wouldn't be a wise move for an insurance company to sell a disproportionate number of home insurance policies in one South Carolina coastal community and then a major hurricane hits. Some insurance companies are so conservative that they don't offer any home insurance policies in coastal communities. It all depends on how they manage their company.
The South Carolina home insurance companies offered by Triest Agency...
Of the companies that offer home insurance in the state of South Carolina I think the ones Triest represents are the best. But that's mainly because we represent them. It really makes more sense to rate your insurance agency and not the particular insurance company. There are many fine insurance agencies in South Carolina and you should meet with your insurance agent to review the coverages offered by your home insurance policy. This should also include a review of the financial stability of the insurance company. I'll talk about financial stability and how insurance companies are rated in another post. You may ask the insurance agent how the insurance company handles claims but this is completely subjective. A good agency like Triest will closely monitor how the insurance companies are paying claims and cease selling for ones that do a poor job. It is in the insurance agent's best interest to make sure they sell you an insurance company that will offer exceptional service in the event of a claim because we are compensated with a commission which is paid each year the policy renews. Retaining a client year after year makes the best business sense.
When evaluating your insurance agency ask them how long they've been in business.
This really shows if they've been through the good and bad times. Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Floods, Fires..... Experience and a long history of service is really important. Avoid the new kid on the block. They may be nice people but you want an insurance agent or agency that has real life experience in terrible situations. I can attest to that since I survived one of the worst hurricanes ever to hit the United States, Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and proudly retained my reputation and sanity. I am the 6th generation of my family to serve the public of the Palmetto State. The great grandson of this agency's founder, Montague Triest and have been at Triest Agency for over 30 years.
