Are we so busy reading our mail and texting while driving to pay attention to the traffic lights? Seriously. This is extremely dangerous. Running a red light doesn't just mean that you may get a slap on the wrist and a traffic ticket if you're caught. It looks to me that the chance of getting caught is minimal. I've never see a driver pulled over after running a light. I've even seen a police car in traffic and close by ignore this.
Driving a car is like holding a gun. It can be a lethal weapon. Hitting another car at high speeds after running a red light can seriously injure and even kill people. All the auto insurance in the world cannot bring someone back to life.
I know that most drivers are good drivers and obey the traffic lights but we seem to have more and more reckless drivers who are putting all of us in danger. What can we do? If the police cannot control the situation then we need to be more defensive. When I was 17 I was driving my mother's Oldsmobile 88 on Chadwick Road and crossing Savannah Highway (Hwy 17) with a green light when an Oldsmobile 98 hit me on the passenger side at 50 mph, a T bone because they failed to stop for the red light. They didn't even hit the brakes. Both cars were totaled and luckily myself and my friend who was in the passenger seat of my car weren't injured. Passengers in the other car were taken by ambulance and I'm not sure the extent of their injuries. Why am I telling you this story? Because from that day after we were almost killed in a split second, I became a defensive driver. I realized that being a defensive driver was the only way to prevent being hit again crossing an intersection on a green light. I always look both ways before entering an intersection to see if some looney is coming through a red to hit me.
Being a defensive driver has paid off. I haven't been slammed in another intersection in the past 50 years. I have been hit head on by a drunk driver. I'll leave this for another conversation.
If you're one of those drivers who takes chances running red lights or is texting and driving then stop it right now ! You're holding a loaded gun and could kill someone today. Be responsible. And if you're one of the good drivers then be defensive.
