| Founded in Charleston, South Carolina in 1903 as Triest & Israel by Montague Triest and his brother in law Melvin Israel. Montague Triest was an industrious 32 year old young businessman and opened the first office at 43 Broad Street. At that time Broad Street was the business district of Charleston where one could find the city's lawyers, insurance companies, accountants and other professionals. Montague was a third generation Charlestonian. His father, Maier and great grandfather, Joseph immigrated from Baveria in 1850. Mair ran a dry good store in the mid 19th century on Charleston's King Street. The store was Triest & Cohen. So in reality the company can trace its beginning back 162 years. All three of these gentleman are buried at the historic Coming Street Cemetery of Synagogue Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim in the historic district of Charleston. This is the oldest Jewish burial ground in the south. On August 22, 1927 Montague Triest died at the company's office at 28 Broad Street. For 19 years Montague served on the City of Charleston School Board. The Charleston News & Courier wrote, " In the death of Mr. Triest Charleston has lost one of her outstanding citizens, one who had been very active in educational, civic, and fraternal affairs and the Jewish community has lost a leader who was prominent in Jewish circles of this section through his activities in philanthropic and charitable organizations." Melvin Israel left the firm soon after it started and moved to New York. The leadership of the firm was now in the hands of the second generation, Montague's only son, Maier Triest and his son in law, Samuel H. Jacobs. Both provided able leadership and continued the fine tradition that was started by Montague. Charleston has always been a city proud of her history and Triest Agency can proudly say that it has been a part of the history of Charleston. In a time when business' don't last even past one generation, Triest Agency is now in its fourth generation and proudly represents some of the finest insurance companies and carriers in the world. Triest Agency is growing rapidly thanks to new marketing initiatives and hopes to continue this tradition of service for many more years.
